In the 1881 census as Herbert Cowles, no age in the index but 8 months on the original, born in Edmonton, Middlesex, and living with his parents (George and Fanny), brother (George), and a servant (Sarah Hawes aged 14 and born in Wicken, Cambridgeshire) in Milton Road, Chesterton, Cambridgeshire.
I cannot locate him in the 1891 census.

Entry in Ancestry London, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921 for Herbert Cowles aged 20, father George Cowles, and Mary Ann White aged 22, father Charles White, on 7 January 1899 at Twickenham St Mary the Virgin, Richmond upon Thames. "1899 Marriage solemnized at the Parish Church in the Parish of Twickenham in the County of Middlesex, No 84 7th Jan 1899 Herbert Cowles aged 20, a Bachelor and Coachbuilder of Amyand Pk Rd, father George Cowles, Auctioneer, and Mary Ann White, aged 22, and a Spinster of Amyand Pk Rd, father Charles White, a Coalporter. Married in the Parish Church according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Church of England after banns [...] in the Presence of us Charles Holdway and Alice Ockelford."
In the 1901 census as Herbert Coles (sic - in the index, Cowles on the original) aged 21, born in Edmonton, Middlesex, a wheelwright and living with his wife (Mary R) in two rooms at 14 Waterloo Terrace, Islington St Mary, London (address shared by two other families).
His son Herbert Cowles Burberry was born in Chelsea in 1908, although I cannot find any evidence of a marriage (but in the 1911 census they had been married for three years). His name changed to Herbert George Cowles after 1911.
In the 1911 census as Herbert Cowles aged 30, born in Edmonton, London, a wheelwright and living with his wife (Elizabeth) and son (Herbert Burberg) in two rooms at 59 Flood Street, Chelsea, London.
His son was born in Chelsea in 1912.
His wife died in St James Hospital, Balham, Surrey in 1915.

Information from an email. "Herbert Cowles. Coach builder of Chelsea and Balham. Second son of George and Fanny Georgina Cowles, he was born 16th July 1990 (sic) at 3, St. James Road, Edmonton and died 9th January 1956 at 80, Cambray Road, Bulham, being buried the 13th following. He married firstly about 1902/3 Elizabeth Burberry, who died 1915/16 at St. James’ Hospital, Balham. Herbert and Elizabeth Cowles had the following issues: Herbert George Cowles and Charles Clifford Cowles. Herbert Cowles married 2ndly 8th May 1948 at Wandwsorth, Rose Annie Stratford (In 1956 residing at 80 Cambray Road, Balham) the daughter of John Stratford, Pavior, and previously the wife of Oliver Edgar Martin. She was born about 1896."
Herbert Cowles was my fifth cousin.
