In the 1911 census as Solly Copelovitch aged 6, born in Whitechapel, and living with his parents (Barnett and Besey), three brothers (Abraham, David and Nathan), and three sisters (Leana, Mina and Rachel) in 4 rooms at 16 Artillery Passage, Spitalfields, Whitechapel. His parents were born in Russia but became British Subjects in 1902 and his father had a chandlers shop.

And I also hereby give notice that such change of name is formally declared and evidenced by a deed, under my hand and seal, dated the 10th day of March, one thousand nine hundred and thirty-two, duly executed and attested, and that such deed was enrolled in the Central Office of the Supreme Court of Judicature on the 18th day of March, one thousand nine hundred and thirty-two.—Dated this 15th day of April, 1932.
