Notes

Christening of Wm Baker in the IGI on 9 July 1816 in Headley, Hampshire, parents George and Ann Baker.

Entry in Headley Baptisms for William Baker on 9 July 1816, son of George, a farmer of Simmonstone and Ann Baker. A note states he married Ann Philps on 2 Jan 1841.

Marriage of William Baker and Anne Philps in FreeBMD in January-March 1841 in Farnham (4 113) which included Headley until 1846.

Marriage of William Baker and Anne Philps in the IGI on 2 January 1841 in Headley, Hampshire.

Entry in Headley Marriages for William Baker of full age and a farmer, son of George Baker also a famer, and Anne Philps (Phillips) on 2 January 1841 witnessed by James Baker and Charlotte Baker (possibly his cousins, parents Stephen Baker and Mary Dutton).

His son was christened on 23 May 1841 in Frensham, Surrey, but the parents are given as John and Ann Baker although there is no record of John marrying Ann. The following census entries do not clarify the relationship.

In the 1841 census as William Baker aged 25, born in Hampshire, a farmer and living with Ann (wife?) and Albert (son?) at at Barford, Headley, Hampshire.

His wife died in Headley in 1842.

In the 1851 census as William Baker aged 33, born in Headley, Hampshire, widowed, no stated employment and living his widowed father (George), two brothers (Albert and Henry), sister (Sarah), a visitor (John Baker aged 40, born in Headley, unmarried and a farmer of 49 acres employing three labourers), and two servants (William Mills aged 23, unmarried and employed as an agricultural labourer and Martha Shrube (sic - Shrub on the original) aged 16 and born in Headley - my great grandmother) at Simmondstone, Headley. George's wife would have been too old for Albert to have been her son, and I assume this is William's son.

In the 1861 census as William Baker aged 44, born in Headley, Hampshire, head of the household, and living with his brother (Henry), sister (Marry), nephew (Albert), and two servants (Mark Barrnett aged 18 and Agmes Hunt aged 19, both born in Headley, Hampshire) in Headley, Hampshire.

In the 1871 census as William Rather (sic - in the index, Baker on the original) aged 43, born in, Headley, Hampshire, widowed, a farmer of 46 acres, and living with his sister (Mary Rather), sister (Sarah Hatch aged 45, born in Headley and single - so not his sister), a servant (Sarah Brooks aged 14 and born in Farnham, Surrey) and a farm servant (George Loveland aged 50, born in Tetford (Tilford on the original), Surrey and single) at Simmonstone, Wishanger, Headley, Hampshire.

In the 1881 census as William Baker aged 64, born in Headley, Hampshire, widowed, a farmer and living with his grandson (Hector C), granddaughter (Alice E) and a servant (Richard Belton aged 28, born in Church, Surrey, single and an agricultural carter) at Telegraph, Farringdon, Hampshire.

In the 1891 census as William Baher (sic - in the index, Baker on the original) aged 73, born in Frensham, Surrey, widowed, a retired farmer and lodging with Thomas Keel (aged 74, born in Braishfield, Hampshire and a small farmer neither employed nor employer) and his wife (Elizabeth aged 74 and born in Farley, Hampshire) in Bridestone Lane, Farringdon, Hampshire.

Death of William Baker in FreeBMD in January-March 1892 in Alton (2c 154).

Baker's of Headley states George’s seventh child, William, was born in about 1816. He married Ann Philps on 2 January 1841; but ten years later is recorded as a widower, living at Simmondstone Farm. A directory of 1859 records William and Henry as farmers at Simmondstone.

Susan F Belsey has an entry for William Baker christened on 9 July 1816, son of George Baker and Anne Swann, and his marriage to Ann Philps on 2 January 1841.
