In the 1871 census as Hester (sic - on the original) Combes Baker aged 1 month, born in Wrecklesham, Surrey and living with his parents (Albert and Elizabeth), sister (Alice Edith), a nurse (Elizabeth Plasters aged 51, born in Barnstaple, Devon and widowed), a carter (Joseph Wooder aged 17 and born in Frensham, Surrey), and a servant (Mary Milam aged 15 and born in Binsted, Hampshire) in Wrecclesham Street. The census was held on 2 April 1871 so he was born in February or March.

In the 1881 census as Hector C Baker aged 10, born in Windlesham (sic - in the index, Wrecclesham on the original), Surrey, and living with his widowed grandfather (William Baker), sister (Alice E) and a servant (Richard Belton aged 28, born in Church, Surrey, single and an agricultural carter) at Telegraph, Farringdon, Hampshire.
