Notes

There are two entries for the Christening in IGI in Frensham, Surrey on 10 and 16 August 1835, parents Edward and Esther Baker. However the entry in the handwritten Bishops Transcripts is 16 August, daughter of Edward Baker (labourer) and Esther. There is also an entry in West Surrey Family History Society Frensham Baptisms for Elizabeth Baker, daughter of Edward and Esther, on 16 August 1835.

In the 1851 Census as Esther (sic - on the original) Baker aged 15, and living with her parents (Edward and Esther), two brothers (Andrew who must be Alfred and Albert who must be Andrew) and sister (Ann) in Lower Churt, Frensham.

She had a daughter Maria Baker born in 1857, father unknown.

Entry in the IGI for the marriage of Elizabeth Baker and John Croucher at Frensham on 4 March 1859. There is an entry for the marriage of Elizabeth Baker in FreeBMD in January-March 1859 in Farnham District (2a 98) but two possible husbands - John Cromher and John Croucher. These are in the original handwritten index so a mistake was made here.

In the 1861 census census as Elizabeth Croucher, aged 25, born in Frensham, employed as a school mistress at Frensham, and living with her husband (John), two sons (James and William) and daughter (Maria) at Barford, Headley, Hampshire. I assume this was Barford Lower Mill because my father states his father was born there - it is just inside Headley.

In the 1871 census (as Charlotte Croucher in the index and Charlotte Crocher the original!), aged 36, born in Chute (sic in index, Churt in original), and living with her husband (JOhn), three sons (Charles, James and William) and four daughters (Ann, Caroline, Esther and Maria) at Frensham Pond, Surrey.

In the 1881 Census as Elizabeth Croucher aged 45, born in Churt, and living with her husband (John) and two sons (Charles and Ernest) and daughter (Emily) at Keepers Cottage, Frensham ( this would have to be the same as Pond End and Pond Cottage for my fathers records to be correct).

In the 1891 census as Elizabeth Croucher aged 55, born in Churt, and living with her husband (John), two sons (Ernest and James) and daughter (Carrie) at an unspecified address between Swiss Cottage and Hooks Cottage, Churt.

In the 1901 census as Elizabeth Croucher, aged 66, born in Frensham (Farnsham in the PRO Index), and living with her husband (John) at Pond End, Churt.

Entry in the Register of Deaths for Elizabeth Croucher in October-December 1909 aged 74 in West Ham (4a 173 ) which includes Leyton. On a copy of Entry of Death Number 57 in 1909 in North Leyton, District, Essex Elizabeth Croucher died on 27 December 1909 at 80 Farmer Road, Leyton aged 74 years. She was the widow of John Croucher, a jobbing gardener. She died of bronchitias and emphysema of the lungs. The informant was Anne Ford, her daughter, who was present at her death, but lived at 19 Briscoe Road, Colliers Wood, Merton. The death was registered on 28 December 1909. Farmer Road is to the west of Leyton Midland Road Station - there is a secondary school there.

From my father's notes she was a cousin of Joseph Baker of Crosswater, Churt. Note that Maria was born two years before the marriage - I am not sure who her father was, but my father's records give her name as Mariah Croucher although she remained Baker until she married. Elizabeth was responsible for issuing permits for the extraction of sand from the side of Frensham Pond (the low part next to the A287) - the Lord of Manor at Pierrepont received 1/- per cartload. It was used for building purposes. Her husband died in 1905, and her son James and his family went to live with her at Pond Cottage, but the owner, Mr Compton of Churt House, died shortly afterwards, and they were given notice to quit so moved to Copse or Coppice Cottage on the Furzehills. At some point she must have moved to Leyton, Essex, but why is not clear as Anne who reported the death was living in Merton.
