A SCHOOLGIRL plans to swim 250 lengths to help children with cancer, in memory of her brother, who died of the disease.
Davison High pupil Nicola Bushby, 12, of Beaumont Road, Worthing, is donating all proceeds to the charity Fight For Life.
Nicola normally takes part in the Mayor's sponsored swim, but this year has decided to do her own. Her brother, Kevin, lost his fight against cancer in November, 2001, at the age of 14.
Fight For Life helped the St Andrew's pupil throughout his treatment against Ewing's sarcoma, a tumour on his spine.
Sports-mad Kevin played football for the junior Worthing United team, Worthing Town and Arun and Chichester sides. He was also a member of Worthing Swimming Club.
When his treatment started, he stopped swimming and playing football and took up snooker.
Kevin's father, Chris, said: "He really did fit quite a lot in. He was exceptional. He was a keen sportsman and he was a Liverpool fan through and through."
Fight For Life formed in 1996 to fund a special children's radiotherapy unit at Middlesex Hospital, London, which Kevin helped open in January, 2000, with Gary Lineker, a patron of the charity.
It costs 150,000 per year to pay for the lease and upkeep of the unit.
Fight For Life helps fund the unit, but also provides support for families who have a child with cancer.
The charity provided Kevin and his family with days out, including a visit to the EastEnders set.
The Aquarena has agreed to let Nicola use lanes in the pool and help organise the counting of the lanes she swims.
If you would like to sponsor Nicola, call Katharine Bushby on 01903 523389.

In memory of Kevin Chritopher (sic) Bushby 09/11/1987 (sic- should be 11/9/1987) – 22/11/2001
Kevin was my cousin, and to all who knew him especially his family he was an incredible young man. Born in 1987 the first of three to my Uncle Chris (being only 4 years older than me he was more like a brother....) and Katherine. Although a bit of a howler as a baby (courteously of colic), Kevin grew into an angelic toddler, and an incredibly lovely school boy who strove to be the best (and often was!) in all he did.
This school boy, who represented the county and both cricket and football, was in school teams and productions and was always at the top of the class, started to suffer from back pain at 11 years old. It was persistent and at first could not be diagnosed, and was thought to be a sporting injury.
Although in awful pain he continued sport and school, until an xray revealed a misshapen vertebrae. Following MRI scans and visits to the Middlesex UCL Hospital in London, Kevin was diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma in his spine. This followed long spells in hospital both Worthing and London, undergoing gruelling chemotherapy, radiotherapy and treatment for infection, during which he showed great strength, maturity and humour beyond his years.....and although tough on all the family I think is fair to say we had many, many good times along with the bad. Kev managed to get through the chemo and radiotherapy with amazing results, he was in remission, the oncologist could not see a trace of scaring!!
Unfortunately it did not stay that way and with the tumor back Kevin underwent pioneering surgery to remove part of his spine and replace it with a titanium cage (first of its kind on a child). Kevin came out of surgery with flying colours back to further chemo and again we hoped and prayed that this time the cancer was beaten. This was not to be the case and the cancer returned for a third time. Kevin battled soo very bravely, but contracted pneumonia and passed away in the November of 2001.
