"Page 282 Baptisms in the Parish of Richmond in the County of Surrey in the Year One thousand eight hundred and Eighty-seven [...] 1887 July 31st Born June 14 1878 No. 2252 Bertie Horace, son of Israel, a Railway Porter, and Caroline Bungy of No. 4 Compton Terrace, Richmond." There is obviously a problem with the year. The two people in the entries imediately before and after had their births registered in 1887 so I assume that is the correct year for his birth.

His father died in 1880.

In the 1881 census as Bertie Horace Bungey aged 2, born in Richmond, Surrey, and living with his uncle and aunt (William and Elizabeth Sarah Smith) at 7 Crown Terrace, Richmond, Surrey.

In the 1891 census as Bertie Horace Bungey aged 12, born in Richmond, Surrey and an inmate at The Railway Servants' Orphanage for the children of men who have lost their lives in the railway service at Ashbourne Road, Derby, Derbyshire (there were 14 staff and 170 inmates).

In the 1901 census as Bertie H Bunger (sic - in the index, correct on original) aged 22, born in Richmond, Surrey, single, a plumber, and lodging with William K Hunts (aged 41 , born in Eccles, Gloucestershire and a post office overseer), his wife (Myra Hunts 38 and born in Ripley, Derbyshire), his sister-in-law (Ada Morrison aged 13 and born in Ripley, Derbyshire), and another lodger (Edward J Rose aged 21, born in Heston, Middlesex, single and a clerk at Cargset Beating) at 84 Third Avenue, NW Paddington, London.

"Page 240 [...] 1901 Marriage solemnized at St Jude's Church in the parish of Kensal Green in the County of London No. 480 Dec 25 1901 Bertie Horace Bungay of full age, a Batchelor and Plumber of 84 New Avenue, fatheer Israel Bungay (deceased), a Porter, and Mabel Powell aged 20, a Spinster of 88 New Avenue, father John Powell, a Boot-maker. Married in the parish church according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church after Banns [...] in the Presence of us ? ? Davies and John Powell".

His daughter was born in Brentford in 1902 and son in Paddington in 1904.

There is an entry in Nanaimo Family History Society Family History Society Ships Passenger Lists Index Quebec Ports 1905-1910 for the immigration of Birtle Bungay aged 29 together with Mabel (wife?), Herbert (son?), Mabel (daughter?) into Quebec, Canada on Empress of Britain on 8 May 1908.

There is an entry in the Library and Archives of Canada Passenger Lists 1865-1922 for the SS Empress of Britain owned by Canadian Pacific Railway Co departing Liverpool, Enland 1 May 1908 and arriving Quebec 8 May 1908 (829907 RG76 T-493). Amongst the Third Class Passengers on page 17 are Birtle aged 29 and a plumber, Herbert aged 4 and a plumber!, Mabel aged 27 and a wife and Mabel aged 4 and a child, surname Bungay, all Returning Canadians, and their destination is Wpeg.
