Notes

In the 1861 census as Matilda Baker aged 8, born in Godlingman (on the original - could it be Goldalming), Surrey, and living with her parents, brother (Edmund), a servant (Ellen Chandler), a lodger (George Perry), and a visitor (William Searle) at 32 Oakley Street (near Waterloo Road), Lambeth, Surrey.

There is an entry in the 1871 census for Mitalda (sic - in the index, the original is Mitilda) Baker aged 17, born in Farnham, Surrey, unmarried, a servant (housemaid) and living with John Cope (aged 43, born in Kirkby, Nottingham and employed as a coffee housekeeper - any connection with her father who was a waiter possibly in a coffee house), his wife Jane C Cope (aged 45 and born in St Clement, Middlesex), their two children (Amy J and Edward), John Cope's sister (Ann Cope), and five boarders (brothers in the index!) at 2 Great Castle Street, Marylebone, London. I assume this is the same Matilda because I cannot identify any Matilda Baker born in Farnham in about 1854.

There is an entry in the 1881 census for Matilda Baker aged 28, born in Fresham (sic), Surrey, unmarried, employed as a domestic servant, and living with Sir S. Dyer (Bart) (aged 48, born in Chobham, Surrey, and employed as a JP for the County of Surrey), his wife Lady Helen Dryer (aged 40 and born in Limerick, Ireland), their two daughters (Eva and Kathleen), three house maids, cook/housekeeper and under butler at West Croft House, Chobham, Surrey. I assume this is the same Matilda because I cannot identify any Matilda Baker born in Frensham in about 1854.

I cannot find an entry in the Registry of Births for 1852-1854 inclusive, nor any entries in the later censuses.
