His first younger brother was born in Dockenfield in 1850, but christened in Thursley.
Not in the Ancestry 1851 census which omits Thursley, but in the West Surrey Family History Society 1851 census as William Baker aged 7 months, born in Dockenfield, Hampshire, and living with his parents (Richard and Mary), three brothers (James, John and Richard)and three sisters (Fanny, Martha and Jane) in Thursley.
His second younger brother was christened in Thursley in 1852, and third in Shalford in 1854.
His mother died in Shalford in 1860
In the 1861 census as James Baker aged 15, born in Dockinfield, Hampshire, a worker on the farm and living with his widowed father (Richard), four brothers (Fredrick, John, Richard and William), two sisters (Jane and Mary), cousin (Mary Ann Baker), aunt? (Eliza Loveland), and a servant (Mary Smithers aged 18, born in Thursley, Surrey and single) in Chinthurst Lane, Shalford, Surrey.
In the 1871 census as James Baker aged 25, born in Hampshire, single, a carpenter, and lodging with Stephen Hurst (aged 26, born in Witley, Surrey and a labourer), his wife (Rebecca aged 28 and born in Guildford, Surrey), daughter (Ellen aged 9 months and born in Guildford, Surrey) and another lodger (Joseph Tarman aged 26, born in Gawcott, Buckinghamshire single and a labourer) at 27 Castle Street, Guildford Holy Trinity, Surrey.
In the 1881 census as James Baker, aged 34, born in Frencham (sic - on the orginal), Surrey, unmarried, employed as a joiner and living with another lodger (Benjamine Olives aged 39, born in Hascomb (sic), Surrey and employed as a joiner) at 3 Herbert Terrace, Shakespeare Road, Lambeth, Surrey. The rest of the house was occupied by Irelinand Lock (aged 36, born in Denmark and employed as a pianoforte maker), his wife Mine Lock (aged 34 born in Denmark) and their neice Egham Lock and nephew Frelinand Lock (aged 12 and 5 and born in Denmark).

Baker's of Headley states Richard’s eighth child, James, was born in Frensham in 1847. In 1851 he was living with the rest of the family at Emly Farm, Thursley, and in 1861 he was living with the family at Chinthurst Lane in Shalford and described as “working on the farm”.
Susan F Belsey has an entry for James Baker baptised in May 1847 at Frensham Church, son of Richard Baker and Mary Loveland.
