Notes
After you father, says Bernard Baker [Microfilm: NL 11240]. (1981, September 7). The Straits Times by Gillian Pow Chong.
Like father, like son. That's why the Baker family was out on a double celebration yesterday. Dr Maurice Baker, Singapore's High Commisioner to Malaysia had every reason to smile when an honary degree of Doctor of Law was conferred on him on the third day of the National University of Singapore convention yesterday. But the big moment for him was when he sat back and watched his son, Bernard, 24, being awarded his Bachelor of Arts degree. "I wasn't able to attend my other son', Edmund's, convention when he was awarded his law degree, so today is extra special" said Dr Baker. The chances of Bernard following in his father's footsteps look pretty thin. Bernard will continue to study for an honours degree in political science and pans to be a journalist. And fatherwill not stand in his way. "It's his choice" said Dr Baker who regards himself as very "liberal" in his outlook. "'I've never forced any of my two children to follow a particular career. Had they not wanted to attend university, I would not have forced them. I maintain that parents should encourage but not pressurise their children. The lives of children should be a happy one, rather than where there ismuch resentment as they are doing what they do not really want to do" he said. [...] He has always told his sons that the most important factor about the job was whether they enjoyed it. Money should take second priority. Benard described his father as the advisor in the family and his mother as the disciplinarian.
