Notes

Birth of Alfred Baker in FreeBMD in July-september 1853 in Hartley W (2c 127) which included Odiham.

In the 1861 census as Alfred Maker (sic - in the original) aged 8, born in Odiham, and living with his parents (Thomas and Susan), four brothers (Frederick, George A, Joseph H and Walter), sister (Elizabeth), a lodger (Elizabeth Pharoh aged 63, born in Odiham, widowed and independent), an apprentice (John Sharp aged 15 and born in Odiham) and a visitor (Eliza Colyer aged 16, born in Elstead, Surrey and a farmer's daughter) in the High Street, Odiham.

In the 1871 census as Alfred Baker aged 18, born in Odiham, single, employed as a draper's assistant and living with Charles Butler (aged 31, born in Sutton, Hampshire and a drapers and outfitters), his wife (Susannah S L Butter (all the rest of the family have this surname in the index) aged 34 and born in Sutton, Hampshire), their three sons (Albert aged 3 and born in Maidenhead, Charles N aged 9 and born in Rotherwick, Hampshire, and Edward aged aged 4 and born in Maidenhead), his brother (Frederick aged 22, born in Sutton, Hampshire, single, and employed as a draper's assistant), a visitor (Winnie Thomas aged 12 and born in Chiswick, Middlesex), eight others who work in the trade and a general domestic servant in the High Street, Bray, Maidenhead, Berkshire.

Marriage of Alfred Baker and Eliza Farmer in FreeBMD in January-March 1878 in Wolverhampton (6b 680).

In the 1881 census as Alfred Baker aged 28, born in Oldiham, Hampshire, employed as a draper, and living with his wife (Eliza), and daughter (Lilian) with his parents-in-law (James and Ann Farmer), sister-in-law (Martha Farmer) and a general domestic servant (Mary A Wilkinson aged 22, born in Willenhall, Staffordshire and single) at Croft House, 73 Wolverhampton Street, Bilston, Staffordshire. However I assume this was not his normal address because his son Alfred was living with just a servant at 1 Arthur Place, Summer Hill Terrace, Birmingham which I assume was the family home.

In the 1891 census as Alfred Baker aged 38, born in Oldiham, Hampshire, employed as a draper, and living with his wife (Eliza), four sons (Alfred F, Frank F, Stanley F and Walter F), daughter (Lilian M), and two servants (Elizabeth F Goodreid aged 21 born in Willenhall, Staffordshire, single and a cook, and Florence M Poulter aged 20, born in Saltley, Warwickshire, single and domestic nurse) at 24 Forest Road, Kings Norton, Worcestershire.

In the 1901 census as Alfred Baker aged 48, born in Odiham, Hampshire, a draper and drapers valuer and an employer, and living with his wife (Eliza), three sons (Eric, Frank and Walter), daughter (Lilian), brother and sister-in-law (George and Annie Baker), and two servants (Annie Philips aged 20, born in Maesbury, Shropshire, single and a domestic housemaid and Mary Ann Wainwright aged 20, born in Market Drayton, Shropshire, single and a domestic cook) at 3 Stensham Hill, Moseley, Kings Norton, Worcestershire (off A435 Alcester Road near Park Hill). I assume George and Annie were just visiting because their children were living in Alexander Road, Gloucester.
