In the 1841 census as Emily Adams aged 9, born in Norfolk, and living with John and Ann (parents?), Amos and Enoch (brothers?), Hagar, and Maria and Mary (sisters?) at Shottesham St Mary, Norfolk. Her date of birth has been taken from this entry, but she consistently underestimated her age in the later censuses and also in the Register of Deaths.
In the 1851 census as Emily Adams aged 17 born in Shotesham, single, no stated employment, and living with her parents (John and Ann), brother (Enoch), and two sisters (Hagar and Mary Ann) at 2 Filands Cottages, Shotesham St Mary.
Her mother died in 1853.
I cannot find an entry for her in the Register of Marriages, but her husband is in FreeBMD as Frederick Alderton in October-December 1859 in Norwich (4b 403).
In the 1861 census as Emily Alderton aged 26, born in Shotesham St Mary, married but not with her husband, employed as a dressmaker and a visitor with her son (Frederick) with her two sisters (Hughes (Hagar) and Mary who was the head of the household), at The Street, Shotesham All Saints. Her father was an inmate at Trinity Hospital, Greenwich St Alphege, Kent. Her husband was living at 3 King Street, Norwich St Stephens.
In the 1871 census as Emily Alderton aged 34, born in Shottisham, Norfolk, and living with her husband (Frederick), three sons (Frank Jno, Fredk Wm and Harry Amos) and two daughters (Alice D E and Kate Eva) in Adelaide Street, Heigham, Norwich, Norfolk.
In the 1881 census as Emily Alderton aged 46, born in Shottisham, Norfolk, and living with her husband (Frederick), three sons (Frank J, Frederick W and Harry) and two daughters (Alice D E and Kate Eva) at 3 Cross Street, Heigham, Norwich, Norfolk.
In the 1891 census as Emily Alderton aged 56, born in Shottesham, Norfolk, and living with her husband (Frederick) and her widowed mother-in-law (Rachel P Alderton aged 72 and no stated employment) at 3 Jubilee Terrace, Angel Road, Norwich St Clement.
Her husband died in 1900.
In the 1901 census as Emily Alderton aged 66, born in Shotesham, Norfolk, widowed, no stated employement, head of the household, and living with two boarders (Sarah Baker aged 62, born in Norwich, single and employed as a bible preacher and Louis Howlett aged 16, Upwell, Cambridgeshire, and employed as a butcher's assistant) at 9 Churchill Road, Norwich St Paul, Norfolk.
