Notes

Christening of Edward Winchester in the IGI on 27 May 1821 in Haslemere, Surrey, parents William and Ann Winchester.

His father died in 1829.

In the 1841 census as Edward Winchester aged 20 (rounded down to a multiple of 5), born in Surrey, employed as a broom maker and living on his own at Waggoners Wells, Pitfold, Frensham, Surrey.

Marriage of Edward Pankirst Winchester and Frances Pook in FreeBMD in January-March 1847 in Farnham (4 121). Note that there are also marriages for Richard Pankhurst Winchester in 1840 and Amos Parkhurst Winchester in 1843 in Farnham so these may be brothers and may indicate his mother's surname.

In the 1851 census as Edward Winchester aged 30, born in Frensham, employed as a broom maker and living with his wife (Frances) and son (Amos) at Kingswood, Shottermill, Frensham, Surrey (between the A3 and B3002 near Grayshott).

In the 1861 census as Edward Winchester aged 40, born in Frensham, employed as an agricultural labourer, and living with his wife (Frances) and son (Thomas - sic - in the index, Amos on the original) at Kingswood, Pitfold, Frensham, Surrey.

In the 1871 census as Edward Winchester aged 50, born in Frensham, employed as an agricultural labourer and living with his wife (Frances) and son (Amos) at Kingswood, Shottermill, Frensham, Surrey.

In the 1881 census as Edward Winchester aged 61, born in Frensham, employed as a general labourer, and living with his wife (Frances) at Yew Tree Cottages, Kingswood, Churt and Shottermill, Frensham, Surrey.

Death of Edward Winchester in FreeBMD in October-December 1881 aged 61 in Farnham (2a 62).

Greta Turner in Shottermill - its Farms, Families and Mills 1730-Early 20th Century has some information on the broom-squires in general and the Winchesters in particular (pp 155-166, 192-198 and 319-323 on broom-squires). The Winchesters are described on page 191, but this does not tie up with my research. Greta Turner states that the William Winchester who died in 1829 was the husband of the Mary Ann Winchester, a tenant at High Pitfold Farm on the 1839 tythe map. However William was 68 when he was buried on 7 June 1829 in Frensham and Mary Ann only 33 when she was buried on 22 December 1839 in Frensham.

Kingswood is now in Hampshire
