In the 1871 census as Helena Annie Seward aged 1, born in Harting, Sussex, and living with her parents (George Han and Ann Lenard - sic, in the index, Seward on the original, spelling correct in the index for the children), her brother (George Ernest), two sisters (Edith Mary and Flora Mildred), uncle (William Henry Chalcraft) and six servants (Robert Bishop aged 26, born in Garlington, Somerset and a groom, Jane Coles aged 25, born in Froxfield, Hampshire and a cook, Mary Smith aged 22 and born in Alton, Hampshire, Harriet Conrt (Court) aged 22 and born in Petersfield, Hampshire, Betsy Prior aged 14 and born in Harting, Sussex, all housemaids, and Kenny Brightwell aged 11, born in Stedham, Sussex and a gardener, all single) at Manor Farm, Harting, Sussex.

In the 1881 census as Helena A. Seweard (sic - on the original) aged 10, born in Hasting (sic) Petersfield, and living with her parents (George H and Ann), two sisters (Edith M and Flora M), and two servants (Annie Croice aged 22 and born in Liss, and Jane Coleis aged 16 and born in Petersfield, Hampshire, both single) at Hill Brow, Liss, Hampshire.

Her brother was born in Liss soon after the census.

Her mother died in Wandsworth in April-June 1885.
