"Entry 97 in 1897 at All Hallows E I [East India] Docks in the Parish of Bromley in the County of London on 28 August 1897 for John Sanderson aged 25, a bachelor employed as a station assistant of 71 Ida Road, Poplar, father Frank Sanderson, a stevedore, and Emma Free aged 24, a spinster of 13 Bright Street, father John Free, an engine driver, by banns witnessed by Edward Francis Sanderson and Mary Ann Sanderson."

In the entries for the christenings of his twin sons on 1 January 1899 he is stated to be a stationer's assistant living at 10 Cobden Street, South Bromley. Both sons died soon afterwards.

In the 1901 census as Thomas J Sanderson aged 28, born in St George in the East, a stationers shop assistant and living with his wife (Emma) and daughter (Ethel B) in three rooms at 66 Tudor Road, East Ham, Essex. Another family shared this address.

In the 1911 census as Thomas Sanderson aged 32 (sic - in the index, 38 on the original), born in St George in the East, Essex, a stationers assistant and living with his wife (Emma), two sons (Herrick Arnold and Thomas Edward), and daughter (Ethel Belerant) in four rooms at 29 Grosvenor Gardens, East Ham, Essex.

His wife died at 14 Melstock Avenue, Upminster, Essex on 26 April 1961.
