Notes

I cannot find an entry for his birth or christening

In the 1871 census as Mark Light aged 3, born in Lymington, Hampshire, and living with his parents (Isaac and Annabella), brother (Henry), and four sisters (Eliza, Elizabeth, Louisa and Matilda) as gipsies at the side of the turnpike road in caravans in Winterbourne Whitchurch, Dorset.

In the 1881 census as Martha (sic - on the original, but stated to be male and of the correct age), aged 14, born in Houghton, Hampshire, a hawker, and living with his widowed mother (Annie), two brothers (Henry and James), sister Louisa and an Issac Light aged 43 (born at Mere, Dorset) at Vine Cottage, Kinson, Dorset).

In the 1891 census as Mark Light aged 22, born in Hampshire, single, a hawker and living in 1 room at Alum Terrace, Newport, Hampshire.

In the 1901 census as Mark Croucher aged 34, born in Lymington, Hampshire, single, a travelling hawker, and living in 4 rooms at 3 Orchard Street, Newport, Hampshire. He had four boarders: Betsy Ayres (aged 30, single, born in Blackwater, Berkshire and no stated employment) and her three sons (Isaac aged 6 and born in Newport, Mark aged 4 and born in Godshill, and Wlater aged 2 and born in Cowes).

The children were later named as Crutcher, and I assume he was the father.

In the 1911 census as Mark Crutcher aged 42 and living with Betsy (wife?), Albert , Henry, Isaac, James and Walter (sons?) and Anna Bella (daughter?) in Isle of Wight, Hampshire.

Entry in the Register of Marriages for Mark Crutcher and Betsy Ayres or Crutcher in April-June 1932 in I.Wight (2b 1336).

Entry in the Register of Deaths for Mark Crutcher in July-September 1941 aged 74 in I. Wight (2b 1170).

Tina Lambert has two entries for Mark Crutcher in RootsWeb WorldConnect One gives his birth in 1867, his marriage to Elizabeth Mary Crutcher, a son Albert Edward Crutcher, and his death on 9 August 1941. The second adds his birth was in Dorset, his occupation as a horse dealer and agricultral (skilful hoer), and his death in Newport, Isle of Wight and corrects his wife's surname to Ayres. John Couper has an entry for Mark Croucher born in 1868 in Houghton, Hampshire, parents Isaac Light and Annabella Croucher, his surname as Light in the 1871 census, his marriage to Elizabeth Mary Ayres in 1932 in Newport, IOW, and six children (excluding Albert), all born in the Isle of Wight.

There are three entries in Ancestry Public Member Trees. One gives his birth in 1868 in Lymington, Hampshire, parents Isaac Light and A Crutcher. Another gives his birth in 1867 in Dorset, his marriage to Elizabeth Mary Ayres, a son Albert Edward Crutcher, and his death on 9 August 1941 in Newport, Isle of Wight. The last gives his birth in 1867 in Dorset, his marriage to Elizabeth Mary, seven children, and his death on 9 August 1941.

I cannot find the source of his wife's first names Elizabeth Mary - her name is given as Betsy on her birth in 1869 in Epsom, her marriage and her death in 1948 in the Isle of Wight.
