In the 1861 census as Elleven Marden aged 1, born in Frensham and living wither her parents (George and Maria) at The Lion, Shottermill, Frensham, Surrey.
The family moved from Frensham to Thursley about 1870 from the births of Matilda and Leonard.
In the 1871 census as Ellen (sic - on the original) Marden aged 11, born in Frensham, Surrey, and living with her parents (George and Maria), two brothers (George and Leonard), three sisters (Agnes, Kate and Matilda M), and a domestic servant (Jane Keen aged 16 and born in Thursley) at Hammer Pond, Thursley, Elstead, Witley, Surrey. This was the Half Moon public house on the north side of the A3 between Thursley and Milford near the old silk mill.
In the 1881 census as Ellwen (sic - on the original) Marden aged 21, born in Frensham, Surrey, single, a governess out of employment, and living with her parents (George and Maria), four brothers (F. George, George Tyndale, Leonard and William), and three sisters (Kate, Mary and Matilda M) at West Marden, Up Marden, Sussex.
In the 1891 census as Ellwen (sic - in the index, Elleven on the original ) Marden aged 30, born in Haslemere, Surrey, single, employed as a schoolmistress and music teacher, but neither employed nor an employer, and living with Alice K Ponsford (aged 35, born in St James, London, single and no stated employment), her aunt (Mary A Brians aged 75, born in St Giles, London, single and no stated employment), and three other visitors (Mary Leo aged 17, born in Shrewley (Thursley on the original), Surrey and a dressmaker's assistant, Annie Salmon aged 22, born in Norton Folgate, London and a glove finisher but not shown as in employment, and Clara Winter aged 19, born in Bethnal Green, London and a box maker, all single) at 40 Grove Road, Eastbourne, Sussex.
In the 1901 census as Ellevon (sic - in the index, Elleven on the original ) Marden aged 38, born in Haslemere, Surrey, single, employed as a music, singing and French teacher and living with her sister (Mary) at 3 Firle Road, Eastbourne, Sussex. Another family is shown at the same address, and she is shown living seperately to this family and head of her own, but also a visitor.
Up Marden is about 10 miles NW of Chichester.
