In the 1881 census as Frank Croucher (corrected to Frank Robert Croucher), born in Newport, Isle of Wight, no age in the index but 17 days on the original, and living with his parents (Frederick and Eleanor), two brothers (Frederick and Willie) and a boarder (Sarah Rogers aged 74, born in Newport, Isle of Wight, widowed and employed as a nurse) at 3 Quay Street, Newport, Hampshire. The census was on the night of 3/4 April so his birth was around 17 March.

In the 1891 census as Frank Croucher (corrected to Frank Robert Croucher), born in Newport, Isle of Wight, aged 10, and living with his parents (Frederick and Eleanor), four brothers (Ernest, Frederick, Percy and Willie) and two sisters (Amy and Elizabeth) at 46 Sea Street, Newport, Hampshire.

In the 1901 census as Frank Roberts Croucher aged 20, born in Newport, Isle of Wight, single and an able seaman on the HMS Illustrious, a twin screw armoured battleship first class at Malta, Mediteranean.
