In the 1851 census as John Croucher aged 8, born in Boldre, and living with his parents (John and Sarah), three brothers (George, Henry and James) and sister (Mary A) at Scrub Hill, Boldre, Hampshire.
In the 1861 census as John Croucher aged 18, born in Boldre, Hampshire, a farmer's son, and living with his parents (John and Sarah), and four sons (Arthur, George, Henry and James) at East End, Boldre.

There are five entries in Ancestry Public Member Trees for John Croucher born in Boldre in about 1842. One has no parents, gives his marriage to Letitiua Croucher, the two children and his occupation in 1868 as a shoemaker. Another gives his birth on 21 August 1842 in Boldre, parents John Croucher and Sarah Godden. The last one is very confusing with several spurious marriages and children, but does give the date of his marriage to Letitia Croucher as 17 September 1868, but also his death in 1904 in Isle of Wight, Virginia, United States!
