Notes

Christening of John Croucher in the IGI on 19 January 1823 in Mitcham, Surrey, parents William and Elizabeth Croucher.

In the 1841 census as John Croucher aged 15 (rounded down to a multiple of 5), not born in Surrey, a carpenter and living with George (brother?) and John Logger (aged 30 and a carpenter), his wife? (Mary aged 30), children? (Hannah, Nancy and Mary), Richard Lovejoy (aged 20 and a carpenter), and Jane Lovejoy aged 30, (the size of the household is not clear) in Waterloo Road, Lambeth.

There are two possible marriages in FreeBMD for John Croucher in Lambeth (Mary Ann Cane in July-September 1848 (4 297) and to Mary Ann Cryer in January-March 1850 (4 222) - I suspect the first one is correct as there was a Mary Cane in the 1841 census aged 18, born in Middlesex and living in St Anne Limehouse.

In the 1851 census as John Croucher aged 23, born in Mikham, Surrey, a carpenter and living with his wife (Mary Ann aged 28 and born in Harwell, Middlesex), widowed father (William), and two visitors (Charles and William Alfred Hudson, sons of his sister Elizabeth) at 35 Paris Street, Lambeth.

I cannot find any entries in the 1861 or 1871 censuses - there are possible deaths for his wife in FreeBMD in April-June 1855 in London (1c 73), October-December 1856 in Shoreditch (1c 87), and October-December 1862 in St Saviour (1d 23).

In the 1881 census as John Croucher aged 58, born in Mitcham, Surrey, widowed, a carpenter, and boarding with John Willm. Matthews (aged 49, born in Westminster, Middlesex, and a journeyman plasterer), his wife (Mary aged 49 and born in Westminster), son (John aged 20, born in Westminster, single and unemployed), three daughters (Maria aged 21, born in Westminster, single and an assistant school mistress, Fanny Cath aged 17 and a teacher, and Tessica Louisa aged 12), two other boarders (George Suckermore aged 6 and born in Chelsea, Middlesex and Henry Suckermore aged 2 and born in Marylebone, Middlesex), and two visitors (Mary Ann Lunn aged 26, born in Hanwell, Middlesex, single, and an unemployed domestic housemaid and Emily Alice Lunn aged 3 months and born in Battersea, Surrey) at 9 Brougham St, Battersea, Surrey.

In the 1891 census as John Croucher aged 68, born in Mitcham, Surrey, widowed, a wood pattern maker, and boarding with Mary Matthews (aged 49, born in Plimico, London and widowed), two daughters (Fanny C aged 27, born in Pimlico and a book keeper and Jessie L aged 22, born in Pimlico, single and a miliner) and another boarder (George C P Suckermore aged 16, born in Pimlico and a grocer's assistant) at 28 Brougham St, East Battersea, London.

Death of John Croucher in FreeBMD in October-December 1897 aged 74 in Camberwell (1d 548).
