I cannot find an entry for him in the 1861 census - he was not living with his mother who was living with her parents.

His mother married George Spickernell in 1866.

In the 1871 census as Eli Croucher Spickernell aged 11, born in Christchurch and living with his mother, (step)father, and (half) sister (Adelaide Jane) in the High Street, Christchurch.

In the 1881 census as Eli Croucher aged 21, born in Christchurch, unmarried, employed as a merchant clerk, and boarding with William Molye (aged 58, born in Christchurch, and employed as a shoemaker), his wife Eliza (aged 60 and born in Sopley), and two other lodgers (John Smart aged 25, born in Tisbury, Wiltshire and employed as a journeyman baker, and W C Sparks aged 26, born in Westbourne, Sussex and employed as a grocer's assistant) at Millhams Street, Christchurch.

In the 1901 census as Eli Croucher aged 41, born in Christchurch, employed as a wine merchants clerk, and living with his wife, two sons (Frank H and Herbert E), and daughter (Nelly M) at 26 High Street, East Christchurch.
