Notes

Entry in 1881 census aged 15, born in Southampton, Hampshire, employed as a dock labourer, and living with his parents, sister, and two boarders William Grove (aged 28, born in Southton and employed as a shipwright) and William Lamprey (aged 18, born in Muckney, Somerset, and employed as a dock labourer) at 8 Albert Street, St Mary, Southampton. (Presumably Southton is Southampton.) Birth calculated from this entry.

There is a possibly entry for marriage in FreeBMD to either Sarah Brown or Emily Rumbold in April-June 1889 in Southampton district.

Not living with his mother in 1891 census, and not in the census. However there is an entry for a Sarah Croucher, wife of a seaman, and her daughter lodging in two rooms at 32 Albert Street, St Mary, Southampton (owned by Frederick and Elizabeth Elliott both aged 34). Her husband is not present. His mother lived at 8 Albert Street. This information matches the 1901 census exactly. The daughter died in 1892 according to an entry in FreeBMD and hence is not in the 1901 census. I assume he was at sea at the time.

In the Ancestry 1901 census aged 35, born in Southampton, employed as a stevedore labourer, and living with his (unnamed) wife, four sons, and daughter in four rooms at 17 Dock Terrace, Southampton.
