I cannot find any entry for his birth or christening.
In the 1861 census as Charles G Croucher aged 3, born in Crondall, and living with his parents (George and Ann Vass), and sister (Alice M Vass) in Church Street Condall. A Samuel Vass aged 66, born in Crondall, widowed, and employed as an agricultural labourer appears to be a lodger at the same address.
In the 1871 census as Charles Vass aged 13, born in Creakham (sic - Crookham), and living with his uncle and aunt (William and Sarah Agate), and two visitors (Jane Goatley aged 75, born in Creakham, widowed and of independent means and Harry Harfield aged 11 and born in Silcat, Hampshire) at 2 Hanbury Cottages, Grange Road, Hackney St John, London. This Sarah Agate had a brother William Croucher who was living with them in the later censuses so this implies she was Charles' aunt, and this William Croucher was his uncle. If Charles is the son of Ann, he did have an uncle William Croucher born at the about the correct date. But I cannot find any evidence that the Sarah Croucher who married William Agate in 1854 was any relative or even identify her at all. There are two possibilities. One is that Sarah Croucher was called Mary Croucher up to the 1851 census (I cannot find any entries for Mary after that date). The other is that Sarah Croucher was originally Sarah Turner, Ann's half-sister, but she was 10 years too old to match any of the census entries.

(The husband of Ann Croucher was a bricklayer in the 1871 and 1881 censuses.)
