There are five submitted entries in the IGI for the marriage of Ann Croucher on 18 July 1748, four of which include the husband, Clement Fields. Three state the marriage was in Midhurst and two at All Saints Chichester. One gives her birth about 1727 in Chichester, but another states Midhurst (with no date).
The Sussex Family History Group Sussex Marriages has an entry for a Archdeaconry of Chichester Marriage License dated 18 July 1748 for Ann Croucher, spinster of Midhurst and Clement Fields, batchelor of the same parish. There is also an entry for the marriage of Ann Croucher and Clement Field by license on the 18 Jul 1748 at Chichester All Saints (I assume in the Pallant which was owned by the Crown).
There is also an entry in the Sussex Family History Group Sussex Marriages for Ann Croucher and Clement Freind at Cowdray House Catholic, Midhurst on 21 January 1753. Was there some connection with the Marriage Act (26 Geo.ll, c.33) (Hardwicke’s Act) as after 1753 only marriages carried out by a Church of England parson were legal (with the exception of jews and quakers). There is evidence that the Crouchers of Midhurst were Catholics.
I cannot find a Clement Field or Friend (with various spellings) christening, but if catholic these records have probably been lost. There were members of both surnames in Midhurst at about the same time, but also cannot find any children.
